DOLL BED TUTORIAL
I sometimes make things to use for my photo props.
I was looking for a longer single bed to allow my Blythe doll to lay flat,
they were pretty expensive so I created my own take on a cast iron bed.
Read instructions first before you start crafting.
Change things if you want. I ended up changing the legs to solid cardboard for strength.
Materials include: masking tape, hot glue gun (or craft glue), ruler, old thick cardboard, drinking straws, bamboo skewers, scissors, awl or steel punch.
First I cut two pieces of scrap carboard (I used an old freezer box).
One piece measures: 34cm and the other measures: 32cm
I either use hot glue or normal craft glue to bond both pieces together, make sure to leave the 1cm gap at each end so you can create the holes for the skewer spindle posts.
(The shorter piece of cardboard will be the top of the bed).
Once the glued cardboard is dry take two wooden bamboo skewers. Make two small holes either side of the bed head and glue them in. Now take two bendable drinking straws, bend them and hold them together as shown below, cut both to the height you want the bed end to be and cut any excess out from the middle and tape the middle together.
I slipped a small cut piece of bamboo skewer inside the straws before taping them together.
I did the same with bamboo skewers along the base, poking the two ends into the cardboard and gluing.
As you can see I cut straws to cover each spindle of the bed head.
I also cut some straw and skewer for the end of the bed.
As I discovered the legs lack strength using just straws and skewer so I added some extra cardboard underneath instead.
(You won't see this much as the bed will be covered with blankets and sheets).
I also decided the original paint I used wasn't great so I re-painted it in black.
(it is still a bit rough, I need to paint the end yet but you get the general idea).
I used bubble wrap packaging as the mattress which gives it a nice feel.
Knit or sew some pillows and blankets and tada!!
Have fun!
